The NeuroCuba Patient Journey

A clear, guided pathway from your first message to care in Cuba

For patients and families seeking specialized neurological evaluation and treatment options, NeuroCuba coordinates every step — from reviewing your medical records to your in-person program at CIREN and your follow-up at home.

Step 1

Submit Medical Records

Patients and families first submit their medical documentation electronically. You can provide:

  • Medical reports
  • Neurologist reports
  • MRI / CT scans
  • PET scans, when available
  • Laboratory results
  • Cognitive assessments
  • Medication lists
  • Previous treatment records
  • Scanned documents and PDF files
  • Other relevant medical information

Step 2

CIREN Specialist Review

After receiving the medical records, NeuroCuba coordinates the preliminary review with the appropriate specialists at CIREN.

The specialists review the patient's medical history, diagnosis, medications, imaging, examinations and other available medical information.

When appropriate, a telemedicine consultation can be arranged so that the patient and family can communicate directly with the specialist before traveling to Cuba.

Telemedicine is for medical assessment and discussion before travel. The treatment program itself is conducted in person in Cuba.

Step 3

Travel to Cuba

If the CIREN specialists recommend an in-person evaluation, NeuroCuba assists the patient and family with the arrangements for traveling to Cuba. The proposed program is approximately 4 weeks in Cuba:

W1

Week 1 — Comprehensive Diagnostic Evaluation

The first week is dedicated primarily to comprehensive medical evaluation, diagnostic studies, specialist assessment and confirmation or clarification of the patient's condition.

During this week, CIREN specialists determine:

  • The patient's neurological condition
  • Relevant diagnostic findings
  • Functional and cognitive status
  • Previous treatment response
  • Appropriate therapeutic possibilities
  • Whether the patient is suitable for the proposed restorative program
  • The specific objectives for the treatment period

The first week is therefore an essential part of the program because the medical team uses the evaluation results to establish the appropriate treatment strategy.

W2–4

Weeks 2–4 — Intensive In-Person Treatment

Following the first week's evaluation, the patient proceeds with approximately three weeks of intensive in-person treatment, provided that the CIREN specialists determine that treatment is medically appropriate.

The treatment is personalized according to the patient's condition and may include appropriate neuro-restorative and rehabilitation therapies available through the CIREN program.

The intensive rehabilitation program may be approximately 7 hours per day, Monday through Friday, with a half-day on Saturdays, according to the CIREN program and the patient's individualized treatment plan.

The treatment objectives are established by the medical specialists following the first week's assessment.

Cuban Medical Treatment

Neuralcim (NeuroEPO)

Where medically indicated, the CIREN medical team may also consider Neuralcim (NeuroEPO) as part of the patient's therapeutic options.

Neuralcim is a Cuban-developed pharmaceutical treatment administered as a nasal preparation. Its use must be determined by the treating medical specialists based on the patient's individual medical condition.

If Neuralcim is recommended, NeuroCuba can assist with coordinating the necessary medical information, treatment arrangements and, where permitted, arrangements for continued treatment after the patient returns home.

Neuralcim is not guaranteed for every patient. NeuroCuba does not claim that Neuralcim cures or reverses Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease. Any use is determined solely by the treating specialists based on individual medical suitability.

Important

The four-week treatment program is conducted in person in Cuba

The patient does not receive the four-week treatment remotely.

The online process is used to collect medical records, obtain specialist review and, when appropriate, conduct a telemedicine consultation before travel.

The medical evaluation and treatment program are conducted in person in Cuba.

For Patients Who Cannot Travel

Unable to travel to Cuba? We can still help coordinate a specialist assessment.

If traveling to Cuba is not possible because of mobility, health, age, or other circumstances, please contact us. After reviewing the patient's medical documentation, our team can determine whether a remote specialist consultation and an appropriate treatment pathway may be possible.

Step 1

Submit Medical Documents

The patient or family can electronically submit the complete medical documentation for review.

  • Medical reports
  • Neurologist reports
  • MRI / CT scans
  • Laboratory results
  • Cognitive assessments
  • Current medication list
  • Previous treatment records
  • Other relevant medical documentation

Step 2

Specialist Review

The medical documentation is submitted for review by the appropriate Cuban specialists at CIREN. The specialists determine whether the patient's medical situation may be appropriate for further remote specialist consultation and whether a treatment option can be considered without the patient traveling to Cuba.

Step 3

Telemedicine Consultation

If the specialists approve a remote consultation, NeuroCuba coordinates a telemedicine/video conference between the patient and the appropriate Cuban medical specialist.

The purpose of the consultation is to:

  • Review the patient's medical history
  • Discuss the submitted diagnostic information
  • Clarify the patient's current condition
  • Discuss available therapeutic options
  • Determine whether continued treatment may be appropriate
  • Explain the recommended medical plan

Step 4

Medication / Neuralcim

If, following specialist assessment, the CIREN physician determines that Neuralcim (NeuroEPO) is medically appropriate for the patient, the physician may prescribe or recommend it according to the applicable medical requirements. NeuroCuba can then assist with coordinating the medication arrangements. Where legally and medically permitted, the medication may be arranged for delivery to the patient using specialized pharmaceutical/medical cargo services, with appropriate packaging, documentation and temperature-control requirements where applicable.

Medication availability, prescription requirements, importation, customs clearance and international shipment are subject to medical, pharmaceutical and legal requirements in the patient's country. Medication shipment is not guaranteed.

Important Distinction

Two pathways, one standard of specialist care

This pathway is different from traveling to Cuba for the full CIREN program. Here is how they compare.

Patients Who Can Travel

1Medical records
2CIREN specialist review
3Telemedicine consultation when appropriate
4Travel to Cuba
5Week 1 comprehensive evaluation
6Weeks 2–4 in-person treatment

Patients Who Cannot Travel

1Medical records
2CIREN specialist review
3Telemedicine consultation when approved
4Specialist determines whether an appropriate remote medication/treatment pathway is possible
5Medication arrangements where legally and medically permitted
6Follow-up

Important Medical Disclaimer

All treatment decisions are made by the responsible medical specialists following review of the patient's medical information and, when appropriate, a telemedicine consultation. Treatment availability and medication shipment are subject to medical approval and the applicable regulations of the patient's country. Not every patient will qualify for Neuralcim or any particular treatment.

Guidance for Families & Caregivers

Understanding neurological restoration

Answers to the questions families search for most when a loved one faces Alzheimer's disease or a neurological condition.

The International Center for Neurological Restoration (CIREN) in Havana is one of the world's leading centers for neurological rehabilitation. Its approach brings together a full team — neurologists, physical therapists, speech therapists, and other specialists — who work with each patient intensively using advanced treatments and biotechnology.

Programs typically last 4–8 weeks, individualized to the condition. Each includes 4–6 hours of daily intensive therapy across multiple disciplines, coordinated by a single team.

CIREN treats a wide range of brain, nerve, and movement conditions including Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, ataxia, neuropathies, stroke rehabilitation, autism, and traumatic brain injury.
